Looped states

Introduction

In this assignment, we continue to learn the programming concepts we learned in the first assignment. And, using the same statistics as assignment 1, create animated GIF for "WHY." In this assignment, we employ colour, form, typesetting, and several other visual communication tactics in animation GIF to synthesise dynamic output, which is different from the last.

Initial sketches

I drew eight sketches and selected three of them with higher feasibility

After my tutor gave me suggestions, I finally chose the sketch with thermometer for further drawing on iPad.

Final image

The first iteration

The GIF is aim to express that the reason for glacier melting is the greenhouse gases emitted by industry. In the picture, as the gas in the thermometer rises, the glacier behind it sinks (representing glacier melting).

When I making this GIF, I found that the flat sea level was too stiff, so I changed it to flowing waves. In addition, I made the effect of plate moving left and right on the sea surface.

Improvements for next step:

  1. Adjust the speed of GIF animation, which seems to be running too slowly at present.

  2. Adjust the size and position of assets in the screen. Due to the video playback page of Processing is not completely displayed on the computer screen, it is found that there is a typesetting problem after exporting GIF.

  3. Improve the connection between gas rise and glacier decline. At present, it seems that the gas rises slower than the glacier falls.

  4. Enhance the animation effect of gas. There will be no animation after the last rise of the gas. Maybe try to make it float.

The second iteration

The second iteration basically adopts all improvement schemes. In addition, I added a gradual effect to the glacier to make it look more natural and smooth in the process of circulation. And as glaciers fall (melt), sea levels rise. I can feel that this version of GIF is more complete.

The final iteration

I slightly adjusted the position of the ice floe and made the glacier fall slower, so that the effect after export is better.

Statement of Intent

The purpose of this GIF is to show why glaciers melt.

In the GIF, the glacier slowly appears on the screen. In front of it is a thermometer. At the bottom of the thermometer is a factory that continuously emits waste gas. As the gas continues to emit and rise, the glacier begins to sink, which means that the glacier is melting. As glaciers melt, sea levels rise. When the glacier completely sinks into the sea, a new glacier will appear in the picture, and the gas in the thermometer will continue to discharge, which will form a permanent loop.

I chose red colour for the background of the thermometer, because it can make it more eye-catching in the picture and represent high temperature. I also added some melted and separated ice floes in the picture to reflect and highlight the theme of glacier melting.

The purpose of this GIF I made is to convey one of the causes of glacier melting - industrial greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, it is also to strengthen people's understanding of the causes of glacier melting and achieve the purpose of alerting people. Only after understanding the causes of glacier melting can we make targeted reflection on it, so as to make changes and provide solutions.
