Design Summary- the Lamp for HER

Client: Jianing Zhao (my roommate and my friend)

According to her situation, I designed a dark grey desk lamp with two kinds of light brightness and colour. I set the shape of the desk lamp as an arc, which is simple but not loses the design.

My roommate is a graduate student in business, but because of the COVID-19, she can only take online classes at home. Her room has a dresser which full of skincare products and cosmetics and there is not enough space for another desk in the room. This dresser is very important for her because she likes to do makeup in her spare time. Her personal habit is to write things in the living room, if she wants to use the computer to check the information or watch the video for entertainment, she will choose to nest in bed.

The interview took place in her bedroom. At present, her main problem is that the light in the room is too dim and lights in her room are all warm. Although there is a bedside lamp, the light is not bright enough for her to study and read at night. She told me that she needed a lamp that she could use to studying and for rest, which meant that the lamp needed to be able to adjust the light. At the same time, she expected the style of the lamp is simplicity, with a sense of design.

In conclude, my client, Jianing Zhao needs a simple style lamp which is able to adjust brightness. Besides, I believe the lamp also needs to have the function of adjusting the light colour because her room only has warm light so far. It would be better if the lamp could have a cold white light to neutralize the colour of the light in her room, which can also make her room brighter. In order to be consistent with the room style, the colour of this desk lamp will be dark and would not has too many colours.

One of the specialities of this lamp is that it is arc-shaped. Because it is placed in the bedside table, the lines near it are mostly straight lines (wall corner, bedside board, cabinet). I think the arc-shaped will make the overall environment appear softer and more diversified, not all of them are hard lines. The other is the function of the lamp. It can provide different brightness and light colour, which makes my customer's demand satisfied. It can be applied to study, work and rest.

After this lamp design, I found that when my client is my friend, sometimes she will hide her thoughts because she was afraid to bother me and want me to finish my homework smoothly, so I have to constantly emphasize that this lamp is designed for her, and I will try my best to meet her needs, it would great if she speaks out her real thoughts and the parts she does not like. In addition, because the bedside space is small, I did not design this lamp to be able to adjust the angle flexibly. If my client wants to adjust the angle of the lamp, she needs to change the position of the entire lamp.
