Virtual Reality (VR) is "the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment" (according to Bardi, 2019).

Besides from Mark's lecture Virtual Reality has three key characteristics and when these three things are combined they provide a compelling immersive experience.

•3D stereoscopic display

•Wide field of view display

•Low latency head tracking

In the first class of the semester, I experienced a variety of devices. For me, VR painting has left the deepest impression on me. A few years ago, I saw some artists using VR devices for 3D painting on the Internet. Those videos brought me a new experience. At that time, VR technology was not popular, and I had no chance to try it. When I tried this technology, it was really shocking. With the headgear on, I went into another space, and this whole space would be where I was going to create. At the same time, I also hold two handles, one with menu function which has various brushes and colors, and the other handle is a brush, which is used to draw lines and create works. Compared with graphic painting, this new way is actually more challenging and requires the creator to have a higher level.

(This is the painting I've done after first experienced VR painting)

VR painting puts forward higher requirements for artists' modeling ability and three-dimensional space mastery. Not everyone can master these skills easily. There is a big difference between painting in space with handle and painting on real media with brush. The handle is relatively light, and the painting in space is more illusory and lacks touch, which is relatively difficult to control.

The VR Illustrator Anna Zhilyaeva (Anna Dream Brush) post videos of her painting with VR on YouTube. There is one of the videos:

Her VR paintings have space, volume, and she shuttles through the picture. From her video, we can feel her outstanding painting level, creativity and spatial modeling ability.

The potential of VR painting in creation is immeasurable. It is the development of the painting tools which enriches the choice of painting methods and artistic forms.
